When people think of ADHD, they often picture the wiggly 6-year-old who struggles to keep his hands to himself and loves making his classmates laugh. We don’t often picture the little girl with a busy brain and loves to talk. For years, girls were overlooked in the research for ADHD. This resulted in a misunderstanding of their need for support as well as options for evidence-based treatment until adolescence. Getting these amazing girls the right treatment as early as possible is paramount for their success. In this episode, we are interviewing Stephen Hinshaw, an expert on ADHD in girls. He shares a summary of a twenty-five-year research study and how to support these amazing girls best!

Stephen Hinshaw is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at UC Berkeley and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UC San Francisco. His research focuses on ADHD (especially in girls and women), self-harm, clinical interventions, and stigma reduction. He has authored over 420 articles and chapters, plus 12 books. His memoir, Another Kind of Madness, was Best Book in Memoir/Autobiography from American BookFest (2018). Among national/international awards: James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award (Association for Psychological Science, 2016); Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Child Development Award (Society for Research in Child Development, 2017); Ruane Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Research (2019); Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award (American Psychological Association, 2020); Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health (National Academy of Medicine, 2020); and induction into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2021). His extensive media coverage includes the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, CBS Evening News, Today Show, and more.

  1. Val says:

Thank you so much for this podcast! I have a daughter with ADHD and it had been a struggle for years to find out why things were so hard for her and us to deal with. We recently tried to get an adhd diagnosis to obtain medication but our family doctor told us she did not meet the requirements. She does so well at school but emotional regulation and hyper focusing at home are very hard work. So it could easily go undiagnosed. I am grateful to the guest speaker and all his hard work in this area as well as the childhood collective to help educate parents.
